Thanksgiving in paradise

Many tourists and expatriates in Jamaica will find that local hotels have prepared a thanksgiving feast fit for a king.
Half Moon hotel for example is offering a curated thanksgiving experience. For those who made their booking by October 31, the menu today will feature cream of pumpkin soup, mixed green salad with toasted pecan, apple, dry cranberry tomato with red onion with fresh basil, Jamaican jerk-rubbed roast turkey, cranberry jelly, pumpkin pie and more.
It's not only all-inclusives but villas which are getting in on the thanksgiving action. Villa Serenity which is located in Ocho Rios Jamaica says it is offering a thanksgiving celebration without the clean-up or planning.
Managers from the property note in their online blog, “There are enough American tourists and ex-pats in Jamaica to create a demand for Thanksgiving food around the third Thursday of November. You’ll find turkey and all the fixings in Jamaican supermarkets, so you can go as conventional as you like.”
They boast, “Staying at Jamaica Villa Serenity means you will have your own private chef. November is the beginning of the best weather in Jamaica year-round. Peak tourism season in Jamaica."
The Philadelphia Tribune notes that Caribbean territories in which the holiday is a big deal include U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and Grenada.
Puerto Ricans mark the day as the start of the festive season. On the menu are rice and pigeon peas, fried plantains (tostones) and other cultural foods on the table.
In the U.S. Virgin Islands, the holiday is recognized by the government with local restaurants offering turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes plus rum-glazed ham, salmon or the local conch fritters.
In the territory events include a Thanksgiving Regatta, which is a boat race which occurs in Coral Bay, St. John.
The Philadelphia Tribune notes that St. Lucia has a Thanksgiving Day, but the day is celebrated on the first Monday of every October. The festival features meals including roasted turkey or honey ham, roasted pig, yams, black beans and rice and garlic yuca says the Trib.
On the list also is Grenada which started the celebration of thanksgiving on October 25, 1983, to celebrate the anniversary of a U.S.-led military invasion that restored order to the country after a political upheaval. It is an official holiday.
