Billionaire Michael Lee Chin to feature in CEO Roundtable at JSE conference 2025

 



The Jamaica Stock Exchange will hold its Investments and Capital Markets Conference on January 21 to 23, 2025, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston Jamaica. It has among its topics for discussion the exploration of the Green Bond Market, Trade in Cuba, the transfer of generational wealth, market performance updates and its trademark CEO roundtable.

Included in the CEO Meet the Press event slated for January 23 is Michael Lee Chin, President and Chairman of Portland Holdings Inc and Director, National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited.

Lee Chin, a Canadian/Jamaican was born in Port Antonio, Jamaica in 1951. As outlined at Portland Holdings’ website, he immigrated to Canada in 1970, to study civil engineering at McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario.

After beginning post-graduate studies, Michael’s trajectory changes and, at the age of 26, he becomes a financial advisor, quickly progressing to the position of branch manager. In 1983, at the age of 32, Michael borrows money to purchase $500,000 worth of Mackenzie Financial Corporation stock.

Four years later, the stock appreciates sevenfold and Michael uses the profits to make his first acquisition - a small Ontario based investment firm, AIC Limited. At the time, Advantage Investment Counsel (a division of AIC Limited) had assets under management of just $800,000. Within 20 years, AIC grew from less than US$1 million in assets to more than US$15 billion under management, at its business peak.

In 2009, AIC’s retail investment fund business was sold to a leading Canadian financial services group. At Portland Holdings je is Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and Portfolio Manager of Portland Investment Counsel Inc., an investment fund manager, portfolio manager, and exempt market dealer.

Others listed for the CEO roundtable are James McLetchie, Executive Vice President , Massy Holdings Limited, Richard Pandohie, Chief Executive Officer , A.S. Bryden & Sons Holdings Limited , Nigel Davy , Chief Executive Officer, Innovative Energy Group Limited and Ian Dear, Chief Executive Officer, Margaritaville (Turks) Limited.

The Conference will be opened by JSE head, Managing Director Dr. Marlene Street Forrest who will speak on “Enhancing Financial Products by Innovation for Long Term Growth.”

Other speakers are Steven Whittingham, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, GraceKennedy Financial Group and Chairman, Jamaica Stock Exchange and Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness.

Gregory Fisher, Managing Director, Jefferies Private Wealth Management will speak on “The World Economy, Opportunities and Threats in 2025 and Beyond.”

The JSE Conference, to be held under the theme “Safeguarding the Capital Markets: People, Opportunities and Progress”, promises, according to the JSE to “examine areas of growth, challenges and advancements that are currently shaping societies and the world economies and critique how economies and businesses can best manage such rapid changes and capitalize on opportunities for progress through provocative discussions and proactive measures.

“It offers solutions to sectors, investors and enterprising participants for financial prosperity and wealth retention sustained by expanding capital markets, which will simultaneously boost income and economic growth,” it was stated.
