CB Group launches the $15 billion Nest

CB Group has launched the Nest, an eco-industrial park housing its newest poultry-processing facility which the company indicates that it is a JMD 15 billion (US $94.9 million) investment by CB Group.

At its centre is an Air Chill Processing Plant, a facility that the CB Group says uses advanced technology to “improve poultry quality while conserving resources.”

The plant CB states is expected to reduce on extra-regional chicken imports, currently valued at $200 million annually. The company expects to become a net chicken exporter by 2035.

The company indicates that it faced delays in completing The Nest including a “catastrophic failure” at its old processing facility in 2022.

However, the new Air Chill Plant is now operational and capable of processing an additional 30 million kilograms of chicken annually.

CB indicates that the Nest utilizes air-chilling technology which reduces water usage by 250 million litres annually and eliminates the need for chemicals in cooling processes.

The Nest sits on 1000 acres in Hill run. The eco-industrial park is described on the company’s website as “A community of businesses located on a common property in which businesses seek to achieve enhanced environmental, economic, and social performance through collaboration in managing environmental and resource issues.”

History

CB Group is founded by Karl Hendrickson who says on the company website, “My first love was baking, but my second has always been farming.”

In early 1980s, he bought a small poultry processing operation, called Caribbean Broilers and over a decade automated processing and streamlined the supply chain.

Later came the addition of Newport Mills to supply feeds which made the company vertically integrated. Although disrupted by Hurricane Gilber the company rebuilt with new technology introducing the first tunnel ventilated, climate controlled broiler house.

Diversification followed with major investments in the pork, egg and animal feed industries. As its website indicates, the CB Group consists of four divisions – Animal Genetics & Nutrition, Integrated Poultry, Food Distribution, and Shared Services and two SBUs – Meat Processing and Plants.
