Financial Institutions in Jamaica report cybersecurity, internet and communication challenges on Tuesday March 4
Financial institutions in Jamaica are reporting cybersecurity incidents or an inability to access online operations. First Heritage Credit Union reports that its whatsapp is nonfunctional while Jamaica National has reported internet challenges and said it will therefore be postponing its AGM meeting.
Access Financial Services Limited (AFS) however has been the most forthcoming.
Access Financial reported on March 4, 2025, that on Thursday, February 27, "our internal monitoring systems detected suspicious activity on our network. Initial assessments confirmed unauthorized access, and we are actively investigating the full extent and nature of the incident. At this time, we are still in the process of determining all the details of the breach.
"However, we want to assure you that our team has successfully contained the matter and implemented immediate measures to disrupt unauthorized access. Additionally, we have initiated a comprehensive review of our cybersecurity measures to identify and address any potential vulnerabilities. We are also working closely with our cybersecurity experts to implement further measures to safeguard our systems and data. These steps are designed to prevent any future occurrences.
"To minimize any impact on our operations and ensure business continuity, we have deployed alternative measures that have allowed us to maintain essential services and minimize disruptions. Our teams are working diligently to resolve the situation and restore normal operations as quickly as possible. We are confident that the steps we have taken have significantly mitigated the potential impact on our services.
"In accordance with our legal obligations under the Jamaica Data Protection Act, we have submitted a Preliminary Report to the Office of the Information Commissioner and have reported the matter to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
"We will continue to keep you informed as the investigation progresses."
