Playa woos UK and Irish tourists to Jamaican properties

 

Playa Hotels and Resorts is wrapping up its 2025 "Peak" offers with a destination focus on Jamaica. In the bid to boost bookings in its Jamaican properties Playa has promised agents who log bookings before 31 March with double rewards.


All valid, logged bookings for Hilton Rose Hall, Hyatt Ziva and Zilara Rose Hall and Jewel Grande Montego Bay will earn double Playa Points which can be collected and converted into cash rewards and free night stays.

In addition, agents can still win one of six FAM trip places to either the Dominican Republic or Mexico with each booking they log.

The FAM trips offer an opportunity to experience all-inclusive brands within the Playa family of Hyatt Ziva and Zilara Resorts, Sanctuary, Wyndham Alltra Resorts and Seadust.

Hyatt Hotels announced on February 10, 2025, that the group will buy Playa Hotels and Resorts for approximately US $2.6 billion including debt, net of cash, the company. Hyatt is targeting luxury offerings outside the US as the US dollar strengthens. Playa operates all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

Hyatt offered $13.50 per Playa share held, representing a 40.5 per cent premium to its last close on December 20, before the companies announced deal talks. Playa's shares were up 2 per cent in premarket trading on Monday. Hyatt owns a 9.4 per cent stake in Playa. It expects the deal to close later this year.

Playa’s 24 resorts with 8,627 rooms. Playa properties hit a speed bump with hurricane Beryl but are said to be in recovery mode.

Sagicor Jamaica has an interest in Playa which is held by an affiliated company, Jamziv Mobay Jamaica Portfolio Limited (Jamziv),.

It holds over 20,000,000 of Playa’s ordinary shares.

In 2018, Playa first acquired the Jewel brand in a deal with Sagicor Group Jamaica Limited under which Sagicor contributed to Playa a portfolio of five all-inclusive resorts and two adjacent oceanfront developable land sites located on the desirable North Coast of Jamaica.

The portfolio included four existing resorts including the 489-room Hilton Rose Hall, the 268-room Jewel Runaway Bay, the 250-room Jewel Dunn’s River and the 225-room Jewel Paradise Cove.

It also included an 88-room hotel tower and spa, two developable land sites with a potential density of up to 700 rooms and a hotel management contract for the Jewel Grande Palmyra.

In exchange, Sagicor received 20 million shares of PLYA common stock and US$100 million in cash. In addition, Playa agreed to nominate Sagicor appointees to Playa’s Board.

In Mexico, Playa owns and manages Hyatt Zilara Cancun, Hyatt Ziva Cancun, Panama Jack Resorts Cancun, Panama Jack Resorts Playa del Carmen, Hilton Playa del Carmen, Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta and Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos.

In Jamaica, Playa owns and manages Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall and Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall, Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa, Jewel Dunn’s River Beach Resort & Spa, Jewel Grande Montego Bay, Jewel Runaway Bay Beach Resort & Waterpark and Jewel Paradise Cove Beach Resort & Spa.

In the Dominican Republic, Playa owns and manages the Hilton La Romana, Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana and Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana. Playa also owns four resorts in Mexico and the Dominican Republic that are managed by a third party and Playa manages the Sanctuary Cap Cana, in the Dominican Republic.
